Woohoo! It’s that time of the year again tequila fans! Now, as fans of Señor Rio tequila, we know we don’t have to tell you all this. I mean, we pride ourselves on having some of the most well traveled and knowledgeable tequila fans in the world. However, this if for you newcomers who are just coming around, it’s Mexican Independence Day this Friday! Grab your finest garb, prepare yourselves for una fiesta grandisima, and get ready to shout el grito with El Presidente in style! So as you get prepping, we’ll share a few of the things we love about Dieciséis de Septiembre, also known as Mexican Independence Day!

A little history first…

So like we were just saying, this is for all you newcomers to Mexican history and tradition! If you’ve been following us for a while, you know by now that Cinco de Mayo is not Mexican independence day. We get it, it’s in May, it’s hot, and it reminds a lot of people of our 4th of July, and while that’s an important day in Mexican history (read more here), the 16th of September or Dieciséis de Septiembre celebrates Mexicos’ day of Independence. Much like the American Declaration of Independence was signed on July 4th, on the 16th of September in 1810, a Catholic priest known as Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla issued “El Grito de Independencia” or cry of independence. Not dissimilar from our famous Paul Revere screaming “the British are coming,” this served as a call for all citizens of Mexico to take up arms against the Spanish Empire. Now, every Dieciséis de Septiembre, the President of Mexico attends the crowd from the national palace in Mexico City, and leads the crowd in “el grito” where he and the crowd exchange “Viva Mexico!” broadcast all across Mexican national television.

Now onto the fun stuff!

Now that you’re all caught up as history buffs, on to the fun parts! If you’ve ever attended el grito in person or watched on TV, you know it’s like a mix of New Years Eve and 4th of July here in the USA. There are fireworks to be sure, but many come out dressed in their finest attire to attend the celebration of their national independence, in beautiful gowns for the ladies and often men in suits and tuxedos. Now, we’re not going to tell you how to dress, but we do have some elegant cocktail suggestions to pair with a lavish evening!

  1. Our Spritzer, just 1.5 oz of your favorite expression of Señor Rio and a splash of Fresca topped with blueberries in a champagne flute always goes with any formal event!
  2. The Margatini, 1.5 oz of once again your favorite expression, shaken over ice with a dash of lime juice and .25 oz of agave nectar, paired with an optional lime wedge!

Tune in, or show up!

Depending on where you live in the USA, there should be ample stations that will cover Dieciséis if you’d like to tune in and shout el grito with the President of Mexico. Telemundo, Univision, and Estrella TV just to name a few have a large viewership in North America. However, if you’re like us and really want to dive into the action, check out one of your local Mexican restaurants this Friday, we’re sure there will be more than ample festivities for everyone in attendance. So as always, enjoy yourselves, be safe, and celebrate Mexican Independence in style! Salud!
